Homeowner Program

BUILDING HOMES TOGETHER

Houses are build or renovated using as much volunteer labor and donated materials as possible. They are sold to a family in need at no profit and no interest. The cost of the house is repaid over a fixed time period; these payments are then recycled to build more houses. The homeowners are required to participate in the construction of their own new home and to help other prospective homeowners build their homes.

How are people chosen to build a home?

A Family Selection Committee screens applicants, makes home visits and makes recommendations to the board. Financial need, ability to pay, “sweat equity” and willingness to participate as a Habitat Partner are among the criteria.

How is it funded?

Money comes from large and small donations and loans from individuals, churches, and other groups. Today it takes approximately $75,000 to build a house. The amount to construct a home fluctuates depending on size, location, condition, etc. Many other factors, such as volunteer labor, donated materials and owner’s sweat equity are included in considering a fair price.
